Green Day drummer has surgery: Drummer Tre Cool of Green Day is off his feet for a while.

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong says on their web site, Cool had a bone fragment "the size of a marble" removed from his knee two weeks ago.

Armstrong says Cool has had the fragment for as long as he's known him. It means they have to put the work on their new album on hold for a little bit.

Armstrong says they have 40 songs finished and he likes just six of them. He says they don't want to put out an album unless they feel "a thousand percent passionate" about it.

You have all the gear, decent mics, pre amps and high quality plug ins or outboard effects, but if you really want to make good recordings you need to ensure that you have the best possible source. If you are recording acoustic instruments, this is usually in the form of microphones.

Mic placement can mean the difference between a great and a dissapointing recording, and unfortunately is very difficult to "fix in the mix", it needs to be right first time. To help you out here, i have pulled together a few online resources with mic placement information.

This page: www.recordinglair.com has a description of this particular studios favoured miking techniques for various scenarios. Also worth a look is the Knowledgebase at www.shure.com. One of my faves though is this one with a seemingly expert dog illustrating all of the miking techniques discussed.

Got your own web site? how about having a yourname.dj domain name? That's exactly what you can get from DJ Domains The web is a great way of promoting yourself as the costs are relatively low, the quality of production is mostly down to how much time you are prepared to spend learning the techniques and software and crafting your pages.

However - there is little point making a site if you do not make it search engine friendly, as people will not be able to find you unless they know your exact URL.

There are loads of pages about SEO (search engine optimisation), a good one to start with is www.diy-seo.com. It would be a good idea to look into this before you start the final design of your page as there are certain things, such as flash and frames, which make SEO a difficult task.

Jazz FM cleared by radio watchdog:
Jazz FM has been cleared by radio watchdogs of breaching the terms of its licence by playing too much soul and R&B and not enough jazz.

The station, which was relaunched earlier this year, was investigated following 15 complaints that it had veered too far away from jazz by airing pop acts such as U2 and Gabrielle.

Veteran jazz man George Melly said he had become so disillusioned with the station he had stopped listening to it, while the culture minister, Kim Howells, told MPs the station's output was "bland and disappointing".

However, the radio authority investigation - conducted between February 28 and April 24 2002 - concluded that Jazz FM was meeting the requirements set out in its station format.
