This edition of the mailer we are focussing less on playing music and more on listening to music. Listening to music is a tremendously important part of being a musician and is great even if you don't actually play an instrument. Most people have at least a few songs or tunes which they love for whatever reason - maybe it reminds you of a good time in your life, or maybe it just makes you feel happy 8~)

If you do play then listening can form an integral part of your continuing progression as a musician as you hear new and different musical ideas in differing contexts, often inspiring you to take a new slant with your own playing and maybe create something totally original.

Remember: We are more than happy to answer any questions or queries - no matter how simple, just e-mail queries@playrecord.net for a fast and friendly response.

We have added a few more sections to the resource section of PlayRecord, most notably including an all new free lyrics search page in the same style as the free tab search page - with a collection of search boxes allowing you to search the top lyrics sites all from one handy page.

Also well worth checking out is the new Free Music Guide which is an introduction to getting music files from the web for free, including links to download the best media players and file sharing programs available at the moment.

General News
A new filesharing program called Earth Station 5 has been released by a group based in Palestine. The software has been written in response to music and film industry groups' attempts to litigate and prosecute people using filesharing software to download and share copyrighted music and film files. This software has many built in security and privacy features which mean that people can not uniquely identify you or your computer. The software also gets around the common practice of ISPs blocking filesharing programs by randomizing the ports used.

Being so new, the program is still a little quirky to use and doesn't have the extensive user base of Kazaa, but if Kazaa is terminated or otherwise compromised then i wouldn't be surprised to see this program stepping into the breach.

with the exclamation "Resistance is Futile", it looks like despite the best efforts of industry groups, filesharing is here to stay and as networks and programs get shut down, new ones will spring up in their place.

With all the great things that filesharing has brought to the web, it has also got its nasty under belly which you need to be aware of and protect your self against. This site has a brief overview of the hazards involved with filesharing and has a few links to tools to help you out.

It is imperative that you have decent antivirus software such as Norton Antivirus ensuring that real time file protection is enabled and you schedule a regular full system scan. It is also worth running a program such as Spyware Search & Destroy periodically to make sure nothing has slipped through and installed itself on your system.

Guitar News

Site News
We have a few new guitars appearing at the moment including a few more appearing in the matt black "Gothic Black" finish, notably including a Gothic Black R500 and a Gothic Black edition of the already very Metal I300 Super Strat electric guitar. This finish is a dull matt finish which catches the light in a different but appealing way to the standard glossy finish and would look espacially at home in a Metal line up.

Whilst we are on the subject of Metal, anyone living in or near Leeds take note:
Friday 5th September - SCHRöDINGER are playing at the Cockpit. SCHRöDINGER has a few of the PlayRecord boys in it, and they are definitely worth checking out if you like your Metal...

Hendrix named guitar God

Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitarist in rock history, according to a list of guitar greats produced by Rolling Stone magazine. Hendrix set his guitars and the rock world alight with his versatile and vigorous performances before his death in 1970 aged 27.

He beat Duane Allman - from the Allman Brothers - to the number one spot on the Rolling Stone list. But only two women were listed in the top 100 - Joni Mitchell at 72 and Joan Jett at 87. BB King, one of Hendrix's idols, was at number three while Eric Clapton was in fourth place. In fifth place was Robert Johnson, who died aged 27 in 1938 and is credited with being one of the most influential blues musicians. Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ry Cooder also made it into the top 10.

Coming back to the Metal theme, we have collected you together a few places where you can get guitar lesson sets online. The first is Stetina.com, the online home of Troy Stetina, a guitarist, producer and author of guitar related books.

If you don't want to pay for your lessons then check out the collection of Metal resources at WholeNote.com, loads of lessons, licks and excercises to get you rocking out and keep your fingers working out for ages.

If you have the techniques sorted and want to have a go at playing a few Metal tunes then check out this Metal tab archive which has bass, drum and guitar tabs for loads of different Metal acts. It doesn't actually have a search function on the site, but with a concentrated collection of Metal Tabs arranged alaphabetically it is still worth a look.

Korn are to produce their next album themselves
After the disappointing sales of their last album 'untouchables' Korn have decided to return to a dirtier, more Metal sound which is not over produced. hopefully they will produce something more akin to their first two albums which defined a new Metal sound with their bassy chunky and tight riffs and emotive vocals from Davies.

"[Our last producer] wanted everything perfect, and that's not making a rock band. You want some screw-ups and stuff."
Korn's Jonathan Davis

last years dj magazine top 100 djs winner tiesto is due to release a new single as a taster from his new album,. the high-octane 'traffic' single is out on Nebula this month.

If you donít know Tiesto by now, then you must have been hiding under a very large rock. Tiesto has been sparking dancefloors worldwide for the past few months on the heels of his amazing new release Nyana, including the recent Sony Duel Play Tour with Nettwerk labelmate Noel Sanger. For Nyana, Tiesto has taken a new approach to the two disc release and compiled one disc that showcases his amazing ability to play before thousands of festival fans and a second disc that harnesses the intimate power of a club. The outdoor disc is pumping with Tom Manganís Chutney (Size 9 Reinterpretation)and the pulsing title track which is an original masterpiece showing a polished progression for Tiesto as he continues to elevate his production skills. Tiesto has included several tracks with stellar vocal talents, including Sinead OíConnor, Jan Johnston, and Tina Arena. The expansive sound harnessed in the outdoor disc is only compounded by the intimacy of the indoor disc. The heart of the indoor disc is the inclusion of tracks from Josh Gabriel and Dave Dresden projects Andain (Beautiful Things) and Motorcycle (As The Rush Comes (Exclusive Demo Mix)). With Nyana, Tiesto gives an insight to his ever-expanding world as he incorporates a sampling of both sides of this well-rounded DJ who can rock the crowd whether its fifty of five thousand.

Orchestral, Wind & Brass News

Site News
We have updated the Free Sheet Music page on playrecord with a search function for two of the best free sheet music sites on the web. There are many sheet music sites out there which want a subscription or for you to pay for downloads, but free ones seem hard to come by, so these two resources are a great addition to the site.

General News
Orchestral musicians are to be trained to protect their ears from the noise of their own instruments and those of other players. The legal limit of sound exposure is 90 decibels but the sound of a symphony orchestra playing a big classical piece at treble forte has been measured at 98dB.

Orchestras are now preparing for an EU directive which will reduce the maximum sound level to 85dB, a drop of 20%. Many players use earplugs during performances and clear plastic acoustic screens are used to protect players who sit in front of brass players or percussionists, whose instruments have been known to register 140dB.

A report from the Association of British Orchestras showed that as well as deafness, players could suffer from damaged frequency discrimination, tinnitus or diplacusis (in which the pitch of a single tone is heard as two different pitches by the two ears). But some players refuse hearing tests, fearing their careers may end if any defects are revealed. The ABO says it wants "to take care of our musicians today and ensure that they are still able to function in the future".
